The Structure, Property, and Ion Irradiation Effects of Pyrochlores: A Comprehensive Review

Since the beginning of use nuclear energy, humans have been faced with problem radionuclide disposal. At present, a large amount waste is stored in pools or dry tanks at reactor sites. With development power generation industry worldwide, high storage cost (including building, maintaining, and operating pools) overwhelming serious, urgent disposal problems become increasingly difficult. Safe economical strategies are urgently needed for long-term waste, which has among core issues utilization energy. Pyrochlore ceramics able to immobilize variety radionuclides excellent irradiation stability, so they received extensive attention as hosts waste. This review summarizes structure, composition, synthesis process, properties, stability pyrochlore ceramics, focusing on ion effect pyrochlore. In general, cation radii ratio rA/rB key parameter related various properties pyrochlores. Zirconate more easily transformed from defective fluorite, leads better resistance.
